Seeing the Future Through Continuous Innovation

Kinmen is an international island steeped in rich cultural heritage. Most of its over 100 natural villages boast a history spanning more than 600 years. As early as the Southern Song Dynasty, the establishment of the Yannan Academy fostered a flourishing academic atmosphere, producing generations of brilliant scholars and talents. Due to the limited arable land on the island, a continuous wave of residents migrated abroad from the late Qing Dynasty to the early Republic of China. They ventured to Japan in Northeast Asia, as well as Singapore, Indonesia, Brunei, and the Philippines in Southeast Asia, to pursue business and development opportunities. Western-style buildings funded by overseas remittances dot the entire island, fully showcasing the remarkable achievements and international vision of Kinmen's diaspora.

During the Cold War, Kinmen was placed under military administration, which effectively froze the island's landscape in the era of the early Republic of China. It was not until 1997, with the establishment of the Kinmen Branch of the National Kaohsiung Institute of Science and Technology—which gradually evolved into National Kinmen University—that higher education on the island was finally revitalized.

Over the past few years, National Kinmen University has actively fulfilled its University Social Responsibility (USR), making fruitful contributions to local infrastructure and sustainable development. These concrete achievements are demonstrated across five key dimensions: Minnan and Diaspora Culture, Marine and Cross-Strait Policy, Tourism and Leisure Industry, Health and LOHAS (Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability) Communities, and Sustainable and Green Technology.

Looking to the future, we have put forward four major initiatives as priority indicators: Active Aging, Marine Governance, Diaspora University, and Sustainable Island. Through these pillars, we will continue to leverage our professional expertise and contribute to the land, the ocean, education, and sustainability.

To encapsulate these initiatives, I have composed a poem:

Lohas Kinmen, where health and blessings flow,

Ocean blue, with bountiful resources to show,

Vast talents thrive where diaspora roots grow,

Ever-sustainable island, where endless lifespaces glow.

Each line respectively symbolizes: a sustainable island of diverse ecosystems, a diaspora university that nurtures broad talents, a blue ocean rich in resources, and a Lohas Kinmen of happiness and longevity. Together, we look forward to helping Kinmen evolve into an island of true happiness and sustainability.

We strive to build a warm and fulfilling workplace while steadfastly upholding campus democracy and safeguarding academic freedom. By doing so, we foster a diverse, critical, and innovative campus environment where students at National Kinmen University can not only acquire professional knowledge but also develop a well-rounded character, preparing them to become the future leaders driving national development.
